Let us praise our God on this, the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles! What a glorious day this is for our Catholic Church. This is also the 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time as we continue our wait for the Sunday green to be seen on our priests. Just a little liturgical lesson.
What is Solemnity? It is a day where we, as Catholics, honor something important and central to our faith. A Solemnity in the Catholic Church is also a Holy Day of Obligation. The Catechism teaches that all Sundays are Holy Days of Obligation. Where all Catholics are called to go to Mass and focus their days around the service and the blessings of God. The intention behind Holy Days of Obligation is to encourage the faithful to participate in the liturgical life of the Church and to grow in their relationship with God.
During the year, when the Solemnity falls on a Sunday, then the Solemnity usually takes precedent, like today. Some Holy Days are already attached to a Sunday, like the prior two weeks, Trinity Sunday and Corpus Christi, but others assigned a specific date, like today, can be celebrated on other days of the week.
As we celebrate today, this Sunday is also marked with some sadness as Fr. Ukeme-Abasi Bassey will be leaving us to begin his assignment at St. Joseph of Cupertino Parish. Fr. Ukeme has been at St. Lawrence for a little less than four years. During this time he has been a blessing in so many different ways to our parish with his wonderful and spirit filled homilies, his musical talents and especially beginning a children’s choir (something that needs to be continued), our disagreements over the use of AI and the joy and laughter that filled our dinners together over a dark beer or a glass of red wine. Please continue to pray for your priest as Fr. Ukeme begins this new adventure.
Lastly, the summer activities are still going strong at St. Lawrence, with our Summer Camp moving forward, (registration is still open) the Friday Night Dinners, water aerobics and different liturgical celebrations. It is a time of vacation with days of rest and relaxation. It is a time where schools seems so far away, but is so close. Our Parish School is still accepting applications for the 2025-26 school year.

¡Alabemos a nuestro Dios en esta solemnidad de los Apóstoles San Pedro y San Pablo! ¡Qué día tan glorioso es este para nuestra Iglesia Católica! Este es también el 13º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario mientras continuamos nuestra espera para que el verde del domingo se vea en nuestros sacerdotes. Solo una pequeña lección litúrgica.
¿Qué es la solemnidad? Es un día en el que nosotros, como católicos, honramos algo importante y central para nuestra fe. Una Solemnidad en la Iglesia Católica es también un día santo de precepto. El Catecismo enseña que todos los domingos son días santos de precepto. Donde todos los católicos están llamados a ir a Misa y enfocar sus días en torno al servicio y las bendiciones de Dios. La intención de los Días Santos de Precepto es animar a los fieles a participar en la vida litúrgica de la Iglesia y a crecer en su relación con Dios Durante el año, cuando la Solemnidad cae en domingo, la solemnidad suele tener prioridad, como hoy. Algunos días santos ya están vinculados a un domingo, como las dos semanas anteriores, el Domingo de la Trinidad y el Corpus Christi, pero otros asignados a una fecha específica, como hoy, se pueden celebrar en otros días de la semana.
Al celebrar hoy, este domingo también está marcado por cierta tristeza, ya que el P. Ukeme-Abasi Bassey nos dejará para comenzar su asignación en la Parroquia de San José de Cupertino. El P. Ukeme ha estado en San Lorenzo por poco menos de cuatro años. Durante este tiempo, ha sido una bendición de muchas maneras diferentes para nuestra parroquia con sus maravillosas homilías llenas de espíritu, sus talentos musicales y, especialmente, el comienzo de un coro de niños (algo que debe continuar), nuestros desacuerdos sobre el uso de la Inteligencia Artificial, la alegría y las risas que llenaban nuestras cenas juntos con una cerveza oscura o una copa de vino tinto.
Por favor, continúen rezando por su sacerdote mientras el P. Ukeme comienza esta nueva aventura. Por último, las actividades de verano siguen siendo fuertes en San Lorenzo, con nuestro Campamento de Verano, (las inscripciones aún están abiertas) las cenas de los viernes por la noche, aeróbicos acuáticos y diferentes celebraciones litúrgicas. Es una época de vacaciones con días de descanso y relajación. Es una época en la que las escuelas parecen tan lejanas, pero están tan cerca. Nuestra Escuela Parroquial todavía está aceptando solicitudes para el año escolar 2025-26.
Por favor, continúen dando gracias a Dios por las bendiciones de la vida.
